Introduction
Unloc partnered with the National Citizen Service (NCS) to deliver the Portsmouth Inspires programme—a 3-day initiative designed to help Year 11 and 12 students connect with their community, build life skills, and explore future career pathways. The programme gave 53 young people from Portsmouth a chance to experience behind-the-scenes visits at local businesses and take part in various masterclasses aimed at developing skills for the modern workplace.
Unloc approached Creation DMC to produce a video campaign to highlight the impact of the Portsmouth Inspires programme, capture the energy of the young participants, and showcase the involvement of NCS as the sponsor. The video content needed to resonate with young people, educators, and potential sponsors, making it both visually dynamic and informative.
The Challenge
The key challenge was to create a compelling four-video campaign that maintained a consistent message across multiple locations and activities while keeping the content fresh and engaging. Each video had to bring to life the diverse experiences of the programme—from hands-on cookery masterclasses to high-energy outdoor activities—while also highlighting the opportunities provided by local businesses like Victorious Festival, The Southsea Deli, Nike Unite Portsmouth, and BH Live Active.
Our Approach
Purpose & Planning:
- The goal of the video series was to capture the energy and excitement of the young people’s experiences throughout the Portsmouth Inspires programme. We wanted to show how the programme helped participants develop skills, connect with businesses, and unlock career pathways they might never have considered.
- We collaborated closely with Unloc to map out the creative direction for each video, ensuring the key message of youth empowerment and the support from NCS was front and centre.
Dynamic Filming at Key Locations:
- To truly capture the variety of experiences, we filmed across multiple locations. At The Southsea Deli, we shot footage of the students engaging in hands-on cookery workshops, learning practical skills in a lively setting. At BH Live Active, we showcased the students exploring the centre’s extensive facilities, building skills through both physical and creative activities.
- Interviews with participants were woven throughout to give a personal, authentic touch, showing how the programme was impacting them directly.
Creative Execution:
- To match the energy of the participants, we used fast-paced editing transitions, vibrant motion graphics, and dynamic music that kept the content exciting and youthful. These elements helped maintain a consistent, engaging flow across all four videos while reinforcing the positive, forward-thinking message of the programme.
- The inclusion of branded graphics for NCS subtly but effectively showcased their role as a key sponsor without overwhelming the storytelling.
Challenges and Solutions:
- One challenge we faced was ensuring each video stood out on its own while still delivering a unified message across the campaign. To solve this, we tailored the content to the unique experiences at each location, ensuring that while each video focused on a different aspect of the programme, they all aligned under the central theme of skill development and career exploration.
- Managing the production across several locations within the tight timeframe of the programme was another hurdle, but thanks to careful pre-planning and a flexible shooting schedule, we captured all necessary footage without disrupting the flow of the activities.
Results
High Engagement: The video series successfully captured the energy and impact of the Portsmouth Inspires programme. The dynamic visuals and engaging editing style resonated with Unloc’s target audience of young people, educators, and potential sponsors.
Increased Awareness: The video content played a pivotal role in increasing awareness about the programme and its partnership with NCS, helping Unloc attract new interest from both potential sponsors and students for future programmes.
